I followed the instructions and it works perfectly with both the "odivx" and 
the "ffodivx" codecs which are already installed on my system. It was just 
a matter of ajusting the /etc/mplayer/codecs.conf (copied 
from /usr/share/doc/mplayer-custom/examples/codecs.conf.gz). If it works, 
then you can use mencoder o convert your video file to some other format.

Maybe you're not using the right Debian repository for mplayer, so add these 
lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
and / or
deb http://jeroen.coekaerts.be/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free mirror
deb-src http://jeroen.coekaerts.be/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
