Applicant's Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in configuring, using and designing
applications with the following servers and languages: Linux, Apache,
MySQL, php
- Familiarity with the following a strong asset: Drupal, Sympa, FreeBSD
Strong communications skills
- Ability to work well in a dynamic team environment

Profile of Hiring Organisation:

This position would support the technical work of the Bellanet and
telecentre.org units within the International Development Research
Centre (IDRC), and provide assitance to IDRC's 'Electronic Sandbox'
project which is administered by Bellanet.

The Bellanet International Secretariat of IDRC assists organisations in
the international development community, South and North, to work
together more effectively, especially through the use of information and
communication technologies (ICTs). Bellanet''s program is implemented
through a variety of services (delivered by staff in Ottawa as well as
partners around the world) related to development collaboration, ranging
from the provision of advice and assistance with knowledge sharing and
open approaches to development, to the provision of direct technical
(usually Internet-related) services to partners and clients.

IDRCs ICT for Development (ICT4D) program has initiated the "Electronic
Sandbox", program which allows IDRC staff, to experiment with innovative
ICT related ideas which can lead to full implementation in a relatively
short period of time.  The Sandbox program is designed to allow ICT
innovation to occur in-house as well as  ICT research ideas to be
explored in partnership with researchers in the field. The Information
Technology Management Division (ITMD) has a mandate to introduce and
support the use if information technologies as they best compliment the
goals of the IDRC and is a partner in the "Electronic Sandbox" program.

IDRC's telecentre.org program makes social investments and provides
services that strengthen grassroots telecentre networks. These networks
give people managing telecentres the raw materials they need to succeed:
training, support, marketing and technology. They also help telecentre
people to learn and innovate together, to make technology more useful
for the communities they serve.

Job Summary:

The Technical Support Officer will work closely with colleagues in the
Bellanet and telecentre.org units and under the supervision of
Bellanet's Technical Officer. Specific tasks will be identified by the
incumbent in consultation with the supervisor according to the dynamic
management of client needs, and although there will be significant
overlap in those needs, on average the work identified will be allocated
in the following proportions:

Work oriented toward the needs of Bellanet (including the Sandbox) -
60-80% or 3-4 days per week
Work oriented toward the needs of telecentre.org - 20-40% or 1-2 days
per week

Areas within which the Technical Support Officer will work include:

Research, testing and implementation of improvements to
telecentre.org-sponsored Drupal web sites

Development or improvement of Drupal modules used by telecentre.org

Assisting as appropriate with testing and developing FLOSS Dgroups
(using Drupal and Sympa)

Creating, testing and documenting Xen-based virtual server
infrastructure

Assisting with the creation, testing and documentation of the generic
elements of the FLOSS Dgroups platform, including consolidating existing
installations, auditing, source controlling, etc.

Testing, documenting and developing asterisk server. Included in this is
the evaluation of IM, SIP, contact management and related asterisk
software components as regards suitability for future FLOSS Dgroups
development

Research, evaluation and deployment of web based SSO RADIUS LDAP
Kerberos type user authentication management solution on internal
network (with regard to
suitability for large scale user management for FLOSS Dgroups)

Organizing 'brown bag' lunch events to present new technologies and
their uses to IDRC staff and partners

Assisting in application and network support for summer students using
Sandbox workstations

Creation of FreeBSD pkg_tool based packages (and/or pkgsrc.org-ize) for
serendipity and other applications in consultation with Sandbox project
coordinator
