I can also vouch for the BSD and pest about their package management.

You may want to therefore look at more appliance-like and still open and
BSD-based alternatives like pfsense and monowall. Both of those are
based on the PF firewall which will answer your synproxy need out of the
box, along with high performance.

I do have to say that those appliances run PHP as their /sbin/init which
i find scary. The upside is that all configuration is a single XML file.
