Get 2 old WRTs and use WDS. Wireless connection to upstairs, and you 
even can use the wired ports on upstairs router as if they were 
physically connected to downstairs router. Effectively an extender of 
both wired and wireless. You will have a small speed hit, but it is not 
much. I used this for years myself. Not to mention you can boost levels 
on WRTs and play with channels etc (maybe try that first, use a weird 
channel... may help).
