I do sometimes get thrashing, where the disk light stays on almost all 
the time.  Killing firefox usually cures this.

But sometime I get no response at all when the system doesn't seem to be 
thrashing, and top doen't show any process with particularly high CPU 
usage.  ctl-alt-F1 still works, and in this situation kolling firefox 
also restores normal system operation.

This situation often (but not exclusively) happens when I close a tab 
that had an animation in it (such as youtube)  It doesn't seem to matter 
whether the animation had already finished.
