Here's on a desktop that's about 2 years old:

   /dev/sda:
    Timing O_DIRECT cached reads:   392 MB in  2.00 seconds = 196.01 MB/sec
    Timing O_DIRECT disk reads:  202 MB in  3.01 seconds =  67.03 MB/sec
   
   /dev/sdb:
    Timing O_DIRECT cached reads:    98 MB in  2.04 seconds = 160.35 MB/sec
    Timing O_DIRECT disk reads:  170 MB in  3.02 seconds =  56.23 MB/sec

`sdb' is the Barracuda 200GB that came with the box.  `sda' is a more
recent WD "Caviar Blue" 500GB (ripped out of a WDBook).
