[MLUG] netbooks / laptops

To wit: is there a 'universal' OS that I could put on a USB stick and
simply plug it into most any PC clone out there? Will it detect the
vital HW and Network info so that I could surf for a few minutes in
peace? 
The latest M$ install where I go makes the entire 'Net experience
worthless.
