I have a had a machine do exactly this and it was because it was 
shutting itself down because the CPU was overheating. Cleaning out the 
system and removing dust from the cpu heat sink and fan has resulting in 
the system staying up and running.

You might also check to verify that the fan on your cpu's heat sink is 
not dying on you. That could also cause overheating.
